Covering The Importance Of Adopting Senior Pets And Reasons Why They Make Such Great Pets

November is a very important month for animal shelters and animal lovers everywhere. This is because the entire month of November is celebrated as Adopt A Senior Pet Month. As the name implies, this pet-themed holiday helps promote the adoption of senior pets from animal shelters. In this article, we will discuss the many reasons why you should adopt a senior pet and why they make great pets in general.

Creating A Holiday That Inspires Change

Adopt A Senior Pet Month was established by both Pet Finder and the A.S.P.C.A. They created this holiday in hopes of changing people’s perceptions of senior pets. Most people are under the misconception that senior pets don’t make good pets. While this is far from the truth, most people would still rather adopt a puppy or kitten instead. Adopt A Senior Pet Month promotes senior pet adoption by educating people on why senior pets make great additions to any home.

Why Senior Pets Need Your Help

When it comes to adoption, the typical person wants to adopt a puppy or kitten. As a result, senior pets are easily overlooked and therefore less likely to be adopted. Adopt A Senior Pet Month aims to break this stigma that only young pets make good pets. The truth is that every pet, regardless of age, can be a good pet and deserves a good home.

The A.S.P.C.A. reports that roughly 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year. Due to these exceptionally high volumes of shelter animals, being chosen for adoption isn’t easy. This is especially true for senior pets. Senior pets may not look as appealing as a newborn puppy or kitten, but they are just as valuable and worthy.

Reasons To Adopt A Senior Pet

The age of a pet doesn’t directly affect the worth of a pet. Every pet, regardless of age, has the potential to be good. How a pet is raised and treated throughout its life has a much bigger overall influence than their age. Here are just a few reasons why senior pets make great pets.

Adaptiveness

Senior pets are typically very good at adapting to a new home. They tend to get along very well with other pets, people, and young children. This makes senior pets the ideal choice for families with other pets or young children. Whereas young puppies or kittens may not adjust as easily to a new home, animals, or people.

Affectionate Personality

Senior pets that come from shelters have usually had several different homes in their past. Being displaced, lost, or abandoned is not a good feeling for any pet. Because of this, senior pets are usually very grateful and appreciative of their new home. Most senior pets understand and appreciate the value of a good home and will express their love in return.

Already Trained

Most senior dogs and cats have already been trained and don’t require further training. This includes things like being housebroken, litter box training, and developing social skills with people and other animals. This makes senior pets the ideal choice for people who don’t have the time or inclination to train their new pet.

Good Temperament

Generally speaking, most senior pets have a calm temperament. This is especially evident when compared to younger pets. Puppies and kittens have a lot of energy and need constant attention and playtime. Senior pets, on the other hand, are the ideal pets for people who want a more calm & relaxed lifestyle. Most senior pets just want to spend their days sleeping and cuddling on the couch with their owners.

Observing The Holiday

The best way to observe Adopt A Senior Pet Month is to adopt a senior pet. However, pet ownership is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly. If adoption isn’t a good option for you, then consider donating to your local animal shelter.  Most animal shelters are non-profit and are always accepting donations.

Additionally, you can also observe Adopt A Senior Pet Month by volunteering at your local animal shelter. Volunteer work gives you the opportunity to work hands-on with senior shelter animals and make a real difference in their life.
